Introducing STARLIMS Life Sciences for Public Health (LPH) 1.2 LIMS: Expanding Capabilities for Modern Labs

April 27, 2026

Since the initial launch of our HTML5-based Life Sciences for Public Health (LPH) LIMS platform, STARLIMS has continued to advance its technology to better serve the evolving needs of the public health sector.

Now, we are thrilled to announce the next major milestone in our multi-year roadmap: STARLIMS Life Sciences for Public Health (LPH) 1.2!

Building on the momentum of LPH 1.1, which introduced capabilities such as Case Management, Bio Repository, and enhanced sample intake and inventory workflows, this release adds new features and updates shaped by user feedback and real-world lab needs. The result is improved usability, greater flexibility, and more efficient operations for public health labs.

See what’s new in LPH 1.2 below!

New Features

Workflow Engine & Workflow Processing

Automate and streamline complex sample workflows with intelligent routing and end-to-end sample tracking with new Workflow Engine and Workflow Processing features.

  • Smart Routing – Configure automated sample processing workflows using conditional routing logic with Workflow Engine, and automatically route samples through multiple workflow steps based on test types, specific result values, and other custom criteria.

  • Robust Biorepository Integration – Fully integrated with our Bio Repository application, the Workflow Engine makes it easy to track and manage derived samples throughout the entire workflow process.

  • Enhanced Workflow Processing Tools – Dedicated workflow processing applications like My Workflow Processing, My Teams Workflow Processing, and Workflow Review deliver stronger functionality with enhanced search capabilities that help you better manage workflow steps and gain clearer oversight of your lab’s active samples.

Rule Manager

Automation just got much easier to configure. Rule Manager offers a highly visual workflow designer that allows you to create automated rules using intuitive condition and action nodes.

  • Intelligent Workflow Automation – Use rules to trigger reflex tests, validate results, route samples through workflows, and generate alerts based on complex decision logic.

  • Set Rule Types for Better Control and Execution – Drive consistency and efficiency with three rule types: Sample Lifecycle, Workflow Routing, and Workflow Alert. Rule mapping filters give you control over execution based on panels, tests, sites, equipment, events, and simulation status.

  • Advanced Scripting – For complex scenarios, the comprehensive scripting interface offers 200+ object properties and 30 methods, enabling advanced rule composition.

Microbiology Enhancements

STARLIMS LPH 1.2 introduces a new suite of microbiology features designed to streamline results entry, minimize manual errors, and give you better oversight of your micro components.

  • Keep Data Secure with Micro Components by Site – You can now work exclusively with components assigned to your specific site. The system automatically restricts component deletion if items belong to other sites, keeping cross-site data secure.

  • Simplify Results Entry with New Controls – New result entry controls and multi-sample actions simplify data entry with structured inputs and the ability to apply actions (e.g., add steps, complete entry, reject steps) across multiple samples at once.

  • Standardize Results Interpretation with Micro Components Hierarchy– Define specification and detection limits, organize micro components into parent-child hierarchies, and automatically interpret results using configurable breakpoint ranges (e.g., Susceptible, Intermediate, Resistant).

  • Streamline Results Import– Streamline bulk data entry, get better instrument integration, and enter data offline with the ability to import results data using CSV and Excel files.

  • Flexible QC-Only Runs – Create runs containing only quality control (QC) samples, allowing your lab to perform independent QC validation without needing regular samples in the run.

  • Faster Run Visibility – Quickly access run metadata, configuration details, and processing status directly with a new Run Information action within Micro Run Setup/Batch Results Entry, improving workflow efficiency without having to leave the results entry interface.

Sample Simulation

Testing samples shouldn’t put your live patient data at risk. Our new Sample Simulation feature allows you to test rules, new assays, and configuration settings in a completely safe, simulated environment.

  • Safe Simulation Testing – Simulation samples are flagged and processed separately from regular samples throughout the system.

  • Stricter Controls – Test new assays or rules without disrupting live workflows using strict execution controls. Access is limited to the creator and designated internal contacts, simulation samples remain separate from regular samples in runs, and only rules mapped to "Simulation" are executed. (Available across clinical, environmental, workflow, and microbiology applications).

Storage Location Enhancements

Support compliance tracking and easily monitor your equipment maintenance with new linked storage location enhancements.

  • Link Storage Locations – View maintenance schedules and details right inside the Storage Locations application by linking specific storage locations directly to equipment.

  • Move Storage Locations and Corresponding Hierarchies – Maintain historical data with the ability to move storage locations and their contents under a different parent location, while still preserving the entire hierarchy.

  • Streamline Bulk Location Setup– Streamline bulk location setup and configuration when creating new storage locations using the Import Templates & Import Queues application.

Test Import & Export

We’ve replaced the previous import/export functionality with a new, standalone wizard-based interface that guides you step-by-step through the process. Get real-time progress logs, enhanced validation checking, and transfer up to 100 database tables between STARLIMS systems with pre-import database structure validation and dependence verification.

Analyte RN Defaults

Reduce manual data entry and improve consistency with the new Analyte RN Defaults application. Configure default values for intermediate result fields (RN1 through RN10) by test and analyte, with standardized values populating automatically during results entry.

Updated Capabilities

Import Templates & Import Queues

Expecting massive data updates or large shipments of samples? With our expanded Import Templates and Queues, you can process bulk data faster than ever before.

  • Bulk Updates– Update unreleased clinical accessions, environmental folders, clinical samples under existing accessions, and case management operations in bulk, with the ability to create your own templates for importing/updating CSV and Excel data.
  • Case Management Import & Update – We added specific templates to support creating and updating cases alongside their case profiles. You can automatically import, update, and manage all case profiles or unreleased cases through standardized import files.
  • Results Import – Import results and sample test fields for existing runs, and auto-finish runs when required information becomes available using Results Import templates. You can configure the system to auto-add QC samples, and create draft runs or logged runs with samples and results.

Event Management & Case Linking

Managing complex outbreaks requires tight data association. Better manage events and cases with updates to:

  • Clinical Sample Login– You can now associate clinical samples with multiple events instead of just one, moving the association from the panel level directly to the accession level with a new dedicated Events tab.

  • Case Linking– Get comprehensive tracking for outbreak investigations with a new setting that allows you to automatically link all current and future case specimens to a specific event.

Next Steps

The STARLIMS LPH 1.2 LIMS platform marks an important step forward in our ongoing commitment to public health, helping labs better manage increasing workloads, adapt to evolving requirements, and strengthen their role in protecting communities worldwide.
